Dear anon,
Thank you for writing.
Bodhicitta (which means: the "mind of enlightenment," or the "thought of enlighenment," or the "genuine intention to realize enlightenment," or the "sincere vow to liberate all beings") is bodhi ("enlightenment") established with citta ("thinking mind").

While Buddhism uses many different terms for "mind" the term in bodhicitta is used in the context of the mind in three modes, namely: "citta" (the thinking, discriminating mind), "hrdaya" (the "not-thinking" mind of blankness, or non-sentience), and "vrddha" (the "nonthinking" mind which includes and transcends thinking and not-thinking, that is the realized, focused mind of the awakened practitioner).

For more on this, see some of what Dogen has to say about it on today's main blog post.

Thanks again.

Peace,
Ted

hello! is bodhicitta the sort of thing that arises after intense practice or is it more like when confidence in buddhism becomes overt belief and resolve to set off on the path, at some stage? awakening in the sense of understanding and accepting doctrine.
