Zen moon, Zen finger

The truth informing the teachings of all the great traditions is not contained within their words. The true nature of reality cannot be figured out or learned through study. In the Zen tradition, they sometimes say that the teachings are like fingers pointing to the moon or like a piece of broken tile used for knocking on a door. Do not become mesmerized by the finger and fail to see the moon, do not cling to the piece of tile once the door opens. If you actualize the truth that informs the teachings, you will discover that moons point at fingers, doors knock on broken tiles.
