Experiential Verification

To experientially verify the truth that the ‘image’ is the means as well as the object of eye-consciousness is to verify that nondual (normal) seeing is not seeing that sees beyond not-seeing (great delusion), but seeing that sees by means of not-seeing. Likewise, to verify that the ‘thought’ is the means as well as the object of mind-consciousness is to verify that normal thinking is thinking that thinks by means of not-thinking (great delusion). This is what Dogen means when he identifies Zen practice-enlightenment as ‘thinking not-thinking’ (or ‘nonthinking). This is also the reason of the passage in Shobogenzo, Genjokoan that identifies Buddhas as beings “enlightened about delusion.”
