Facing reality squarely

[the] authentic Zen practitioner is one that directly and unconditionally faces whatever the world presents, no matter how difficult, uninviting, demanding, tedious, terrifying, or horrific. Contemporary ‘Zen’ doctrines or methods that encourage submission to and or detachment from the world as it is diverge widely from the classic Zen teachings which insist on giving focused attention to all aspects of reality ‘as it is’ and an unremitting commitment to make every aspect all ‘it can be.’
