Translations – Shobogenzo, 96 Fascicles

Shobogenzo
Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma –
By Zen Master: Eihei Dogen (1200 – 1253)

 Meaning of the title “Shobogenzo”

Sho: “right,” “true,” “accurate,” “exact.” Ho: (lit. “Dharma”) “law,” “principle” (of Buddhism) Gen: “eye,” “eyesight,” “vision,” (can suggest the meaning of a “point of view,” or “viewpoint) Zo: “storehouse,” “treasury,” (Imperial) “archives.”

[Note: “Ho” and “Gen” used together (Hogen) in Buddhist literature means “Dharma-eye,” which is often used synonymously with “Buddha-eye,” “Eye-of-enlightenment,” “Eye-to-read-scripture,” “Wisdom-eye,” and similar terms.
Alternative English Translations: Treasury of the True Dharma Eye (Hee-Jin Kim), True Dharma-Eye Treasury (Gudo Nishijima & Mike Cross), Treasury of the Eye of True Teaching (Thomas Cleary)
